Health Department says case of bird flu found in NC dairy herd

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said it is monitoring the case and believes the risk to the public is low.

NORTH CAROLINA (WTVD) — Bird flu has been found in a dairy in North Carolina.

North Carolina Department of Agriculture Consumer Services said it is monitoring the case and believes the risk to the public is low.

According to fda, Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is a disease of poultry that is highly contagious and often fatal in poultry. It is also known as bird or avian flu.

The department issued a statement on Wednesday saying:

“NC Department of Agriculture And Consumer Services and the NC Department of Health and Human Services are in close communication on this matter. Both agencies believe the overall risk to the general public is low. There are currently no concerns about the safety of the commercial milk supply as products are pasteurized before entering the market. People should not consume or prepare food with raw or unpasteurized milk.”
