Helldivers 2’s new mission type is the glorious Helm’s Deep holdout defense that I’ve dreamed of for months
Helldivers 2 is, in general, a game of battling the enemy by destroying nests, factories, and launching ICBMs. On the rare occasion when Super Earth is put on defense, it has not always gone over well with players. During the first Automaton invasion in February, players quickly grew tired of the special escort missions that required them to protect vulnerable civilians as they fled the battlefield. The next defense function came with termiticide towers, which were supposed to protect against insects that constantly moved towards them.
Those missions were a lot of fun, but they weren't what I expected. A simple, straight-less wave defense mode in Helldivers 2 seemed like a natural fit. Turns out I just had to wait a while. Today's surprise re-attack on Cyberston by the Automaton brings another special defense assignment: “Evacuate high value assets” By protecting the missile silo from concentrated waves of robots. You'll recognize mission types by their shield insignia.
The mission briefing reads:
“The enemy is stockpiling high-value assets seized since the First Galactic War. We cannot allow them to be captured. The enemy will be alerted to your location as soon as the evacuation process begins. “Defend this site until all assets are safely evacuated from the planet.”
Suppresses brief leadership. Yes, We're Protecting More Super Earth Assets, But These Facilities Are Built That Way Deep trench:There are high walls around the silo, and all the bots have to be funneled through a narrow chokepoint. That single path is segmented by a series of walls with player-controlled gates that can keep the bots out for a short time (but will eventually be destroyed). Bot drops come in waves and you have to wait long enough to launch eight rockets. It took my team 15-20 minutes to complete a run on difficulty seven.
These missions are glorious. Peak Helldivers Defense is happening here, and it couldn't be simpler than this. There are no console minigames, SSSDs to carry, or squishy humans to escort – just pure, unlimited freedom spread across a very small area. Defensive strategies shine like never before – Tesla towers, Gatling sentries, and even the often overlooked shield dome come into play when threats are so centralized.
I rarely get the perfect opportunity to bring one of my favorite tactics, the HMG emplacement gun, to a specific mission, but here they are perfect for laying down heavy fire from high up on walls.
During the early waves, it was almost too easy to shoot down every dropship with Quasar cannons before most of the bots touched the ground. Our confidence did not last. We lost our first wall within minutes, and gradually lost our safety as we were pushed back into the silo. We were just killing the bots a little bit slower, then getting stronger, then we managed to squeeze out a minute or two before getting overtaken.
The new “Evacuate High-Value Assets” mission type is extremely fun and exactly what a defense mission should be From r/hellgivers
I'm not the only person excited about the new mission type. A Top-upvoted posts Arrowhead is currently being praised on the Helldivers subreddit for realizing the idea of a layered defensive holdout.
User Krilitzke wrote, “Stopping wave after wave of bots as we slowly lose ground and are pushed deeper into our lines, after realizing that holding a specific layer is no longer viable, Being forced to step back tactically is so incredibly fun.” “It would be amazing if we could find a bug for more layered defense type missions or its equivalent because it's that cool.”
“More things like this please!!!” Added Chingderarara, who won one high-value asset mission and lost another on difficulty level nine.
Many commentators also said that the new missions, while fun, may be a little too easy. I agree that they are easier than other missions, at least so far, but I think this may take away from the huge high ground advantage players get – unlike every other mission in Helldivers 2, you only get one. Disha has to be covered. This doesn't make the missions any less thrilling in my book, but you always have the option to turn the difficulty up a few notches more than before.
the user kvesloth13 Added that, in fact, Antonym This type of mission can be a lot of fun too.
“Now we need the opposite of this mission, where you have to step up their multi-layered security,” he wrote. “This will give a reason to bring that 380 (barrage) to LoL.”
Now he is an idea. And it's nice to know that it's totally possible. So far, Arrowhead has added an exclusive new mission type every month, so why not turn the tables one day and let us divers break through the layers of protection?
For once, we already know what the next big content for Helldivers 2 will be. On Thursday, another premium Warbond released with a handful of new guns and suits to unlock.
